Our Practice Areas

Real Estate

In our real estate practice, we are United States real estate counsel and general business counsel to a leading international furniture retailer. We handle real estate transactions for one of the Mid-Atlantic’s dominant supermarket chains. We represent the largest non-sectarian operator of private schools in the United States in real estate development and sale/leaseback transactions. We also represent developers, owners and retailers in the purchase, sale, development, financing and leasing of significant real estate projects.

Litigation

Our litigated matters are typically complex and include such diverse areas as banking, bankruptcy, corporate and partnership governance, commercial and government contracts, employment, insurance coverage, civil and criminal antitrust and securities, libel, professional malpractice (non-medical) and real estate. A number of the litigated matters arise out of the construction industry, encompassing bid protests, claims by and against owners, disputes between contractors and subcontractors, real estate development and project financing . Over the years, our clients in litigated matters have included internationally-owned and Fortune 500 and other large publicly- and privately-held United States corporations, joint ventures and partnerships, major banks and hospitals, heavy and highway contractors, general and specialty contractors, architectural, accounting and law firms, as well as individuals and small businesses in the Mid-Atlantic region and elsewhere.

Business

Our general business practice is comprehensive and diverse, with clients spanning all segments of the business community. We are able to satisfy virtually every need of an emerging or active business, including start-up, formation and growth planning; advice and drafting concerning ownership, employment, consulting and severance agreements; structuring, negotiation and preparation of contracts in connection with licensing and financing arrangements and sales, acquisitions and mergers of businesses and assets; as well as ongoing business advice in connection with matters such as intellectual property, litigation, leasing, taxation, restructuring and employer-employee relations. We also counsel business investors and executives in financial and estate planning.

Arbitration and Mediation

In addition to counseling and advocating for our clients, we have extensive experience as neutral decision-makers. We have been appointed as arbitrators, special masters and fee auditors in litigation and bankruptcy proceedings, and we have been engaged by parties as arbitrators in private proceedings. In addition, we serve by selection of parties and by court appointments as mediators and settlement masters in various standing programs and have taught lawyers alternative dispute resolution techniques in continuing legal education programs.
